What is the Fall Line? Why is Columbus located where it is? Ask your student to explain both of these things to you! On Friday, August 29th, all of St. Luke's 8th graders rafted down the Fall Line.
The Fall Line is where a river crosses from the Piedmont region down to the Coastal Plain. The drop in elevation results in rapids. Early settlers used the river for hydro-power in mills. The fall line is also the end of the navigable river for steamboats, therefore Columbus was an area trading center.
